You know what I’m talking about. There is such thing and we, the gamers, know it.
There are a lot of game studios out there building their games from the ground up to optimize sales. Even if it means that those games will use psychological techniques to addict you, or if it means that they will cut core contents from the game in order to sell them as DLCs.
I’m not saying that ALL studios that makes addicting games or releases tons of DLCs are evil.
But in the other hand, we have some cool kids around, and even some veterans are learning to not follow these “evil patterns”.
Here in Turtle Hearts we believe that a game studio should focus on making great games. It may sound a bit cliché, but it is what it is. We also believe in the community of gamers and makers, and how they can support each other.
Let’s talk about Green Heart Games
They are the guys behind the great Game Dev Tycoon, a video game studio simulator where you begin your journey in the 80’s and grow your studio from there.
Why I’m going to talk about them?
1 – They inspired me to create Turtle Hearts
It is true. Every single time that I spent some hours playing Game Dev Tycoon, this feeling kept in my head.
I could do this
Until I had a crazy idea.
What would happen if I try to make a game using their “method” of 3 stages and 9 subjects, which had some like Gameplay, Dialogues, Level Design, etc.
I did it, but this story is for another time.
What I want you to know is that it worked really well, and it was the start of the real first game from Turtle Hearts. Race In The Galaxy.
2 – They are awesome
One of the best things in the history of piracy in games came from Green Heart Games. They released a torrent of their own game, on launch day, where the player goes bankrupt because of piracy. Sweet irony. It is sad that the number of people who bought the game in the first day were 214, and the amount of people who pirated the game was 3104. Even though, they managed to stand out in the community and today they are among the great names in indie game development.
They also made a GREAT April’s 1st blog post, where they announced an expansion: You have to build an “evil studio”, like those that I talked about.
3 – Their heart is green
Yes. We are Turtle Hearts and they are Green Heart Games. There is love everywhere, and it is green.
But seriously. They started with nothing and were capable of creating a great game with a great community. It is an inspiration for me.
Why talk about other studios here?
We need to know that there are good studios who are concerned about making games that are fun to play, and we are working hard to follow this idea.
So, what do you think about this? Do you care for what are the values behind a game studio, or you just want to play? What about DRMs, are they evil as well?
